    This capstone course requires students to observe and experience practical situations in art education at the K-12 grade level. Participants observe and interact with students in a variety of levels and situations. The class includes fifteen hours of classroom observation and written reports. The practicum experience requires fifteen hours of interaction with teachers and students in the classroom.     Theoretical and experiential study of art therapy with groups. Includes the practical aspects of creating and maintaining art therapy groups. Students experience various approaches to group art therapy. Skills developed through readings and in-class experientials include: understanding group dynamics, determining group needs, and designing group art therapy processes that meet the needs of a variety of client groups in different treatment settings.     Family systems theory and art therapy techniques are integrated and explored. Students become adept at family art evaluation and learn to use art based interventions with couples and families. Emphasis is on family treatment methods as well as the use of a family systems context when treating individuals and couples. Includes a brief practicum with a volunteer family.     Introduces prominent theories of traumatic stress and the potential impact of traumatic events and oppressive systems on individuals, families, groups, and communities.  Establishes interventions and treatment modalities for working with those affected by traumatic stress.  Focus will be on fostering resilience and post-traumatic growth in survivors and communities as well as self-care strategies for caregivers.   • SAT 565 - Art Therapy with Adults (Art Therapy)

    Various mental and physical challenges that affect individuals from late adolescence into late adulthood are reviewed. Art therapy assessments and interventions to address those challenges are explored. Development of case studies is practiced, including administering and writing up assessments, streamlining progress notes, and devising and documenting treatment plans. Emphasis is on work with individual adults, primarily in clinical settings. Must be completed with a grade of B- (2.67) or higher for continuation in the Art Therapy program. Spring semester. Fee.

    An exploration of professional, ethical, diversity, and assessment issues that arise in art therapy practice. This course is designed to supplement required courses in professional ethics, multicultural counseling, and assessment. Students consider the implications of including art-making in assessment and treatment, in diverse therapeutic environments, with diverse clients. Issues are identified, discussed, and debated with reference to current professional codes of practice.   • SAT 600 - Practicum/ Internship 1 (Art Therapy)

    3 Credit(s)

    The first of two semesters of supervision seminars focusing on the integration of theory and practice. While in practicum students participate in group review of their field observations, their interactions with agency staff and clients, their comprehension of the population served, and the services provided by the agency. During internship students assume direct responsibility for working with clients and review case material, reflecting on: assessment, art-based treatment planning, and on-going analysis of their own development as practitioners. Legal, ethical, diversity, assessment, and site-specific issues are addressed. Progress notes, charting, oral and written presentations of case material, and responsive art-making are included. Fee. Pass/Fail only. Taken while students complete 100 hours of practicum, followed by 250 hours of internship.

    The culminating project demonstrates an integration of the student’s academic program of study with clinical experiences that occur during internship. Design of the project, the final product, and an oral presentation of the project are approved by the student’s culminating project committee. All projects include reference to relevant art therapy and counseling research and literature. Proposals for the culminating project are submitted and approved in the semester prior to enrollment in the course. Must be completed with a grade of B- or higher. Fee.
