SCH 224 - Foundations of Biochemistry (Chemistry)

This course provides foundational knowledge in biochemistry with an emphasis on its application to human health and disease. Students will explore the chemical principles underlying biological systems and the molecular basis of life. Topics include the structure and function of biomolecules including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids; enzymology and enzyme regulation; metabolic pathways and their integration; and the biochemical mechanisms involved in physiological processes and pathological conditions. Emphasis will be placed on clinical correlations, providing a foundation for understanding diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. This course is designed for students in Medical Studies, and other health science programs, providing preparation for advanced medical study in clinical pathology for the Physician Assistant program and other healthcare fields.
