SHY 300 - Disease & Health in Global History (History)3 Credit(s)
This course examines the healing traditions of global cultures through history, examining health, disease around the world from prehistory to the present. Included are the elements and practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, as well as the traditions of the African continent and the Americas. We will compare the Western/Biomedical tradition with these traditions, emphasizing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. The course integrates ideas of wellness, the body, the mind, disease, diagnosis and treatment in a global historical context. When Offered: Spring semester, odd-numbered years. Liberal Arts Curriculum: Satisfies the Setonian Mission requirement.
