In gender and women’s studies classes, students and faculty actively participate in teaching and learning, with each individual’s life experience serving as an important foundation for knowledge. Gender and women’s studies courses integrate subjective and objective learning, studying gender’s effects on power, relationships, social customs, and institutions. Students gain sensitivity to oppression based on all types of prejudice, and they are encouraged to act on the values they discover, often receiving course credit for community service.

Gender and women’s studies courses help students gain confidence and motivation and offer opportunities for leadership. The minor complements majors such as psychology, social work, and theology, offering especially good preparation for family and women-centered social service careers. Additionally, since many graduate programs (including art history, literature, history, psychology, and law) emphasize gender issues, the minor offers a clear advantage for students who pursue graduate work in these fields.

Learning Objectives: Gender and Women’s Studies

1. Summarize and assess the four waves of feminism in the United States.
2. Explain, compare and critique the major theories of feminism and gender studies and articulate what theory or theories a student identifies closely with.
3. Apply gender studies to contemporary issues.
4. Create a plan for taking action that can help to advance gender equity.
5. Explain and appraise key concepts in gender studies.
