Critical & Cultural Literacy, M.Ed.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Critical & Cultural Literacy provides certified teachers with the training they need to pursue careers as Literacy Professionals.  In addition to assuming leadership roles in assessment, research, and policy-making firms, graduates will be eligible to become Reading Specialists by passing the state certification exam.

 

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of the Critical & Cultural Literacy Program, graduates will be prepared to:

  1. Provide reading instruction to students (PreK-12) across the curriculum.
  2. Maintain multi-tiered systems of support for readers at all proficiency levels.
  3. Collaborate with allied professionals to provide coaching and remediation.
  4. Advance a critical approach to literacy that empowers students to take action.
  5. Implement culturally-responsive reading instruction, assessment, and intervention.
  6. Develop critical, cultural, spiritual, and visual literacy programs.

 

Admission:

Students who wish to enroll in the Critical & Cultural Literacy Program must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from a regionally accredited institution and an Instructional I teaching certificate from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Reading Specialist Certification Only:


Certified teachers can also pursue Reading Specialist Certification as an add-on by completing the Reading Specialist Post-Baccalaureate Program.  This program, which is comprised of eight courses, provides teachers with the twenty-four credits needed for Level II certificate and mirrors the curriculum for the M.Ed. in Critical and Cultural Literacy, minus SED667 and SED669.
