The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood Education provides aspiring teachers with the training they need to earn their initial certification in Grades PreK-4. This program, which focuses on structured literacy and culturally-relevant and sustaining pedagogy, can be completed in one year, and graduates will be eligible to add additional certification areas through testing. The Early Childhood Education Program at Seton Hill University, which is housed within the School of Education & Applied Social Sciences, is dedicated to the preparation of classroom teachers who provide students with equitable and differentiated learning opportunities, communicate in culturally and linguistically appropriate ways, and advocate for socially-conscious change.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of the MAT Program, graduates will be prepared to:

  1. Provide culturally-relevant instruction to students (Pre-K-Grade 4) across the curriculum.
  2. Supplement core instruction with structured literacy practices.
  3. Implement accommodations for students with disabilities in inclusive settings.
  4. Deliver a standards-based curriculum with developmentally appropriate strategies.
  5. Utilize action research to examine and improve their own practice.
  6. Engage in continuous collaborative learning with families, colleagues, and stakeholders.

Admission:

Those who wish to enroll in the MAT Program must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 from a regionally accredited institution and have completed at least six credits of mathematics, three credits of composition, and three credits of literature. Students who do not meet the course requirements, may complete them concurrently during the Summer session, either at Seton Hill or another accredited institution.
