Students critically examine the philosophical foundations and principles of communication and social advocacy to engage the news media, help organize a community, and influence action. Topics include: the social activist and community outreach; leveraging social networks; power, powerlessness, and empowerment; contextual analysis, problem identification, and power mapping; lobbying, leadership, and coalition-building; advocacy journalism; and assessment strategies.
