This course provides an overview of traditions and transformations of music in global perspective, exploring music as a phenomenon of sound and culture. The course explores exemplary non-Western genres from a range of cultural and geographic areas and the complex combinations of social, historical, political, economic, and artistic factors that shaped different musics in various contest. As a result, this course is useful for students both inside and outside the formal discipline of music.
