SED 288 - Linguistic & Cultural Diversity (Education)

3 Credit(s)

Learning is influenced by linguistic and cultural differences. Rather than framing these differences as a fixed or tangible set of qualities that somehow predicts or controls student achievement, it is important for teachers to develop more conceptually sophisticated understandings of how language and culture affects educational outcomes for diverse learners. The purpose of this course, which foregrounds issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, is to prepare preservice teachers for working with populations of students with whom they may have little personal or professional experience. Topics include navigating student identity, managing cultural transitions, and resolving differences.

 Credits: 3.

When Offered: Fall and spring semester.
