This course explores the complex relationship between literature and medicine, focusing on the role narrative plays in our understanding of illness, healing, and death. Some areas of inquiry include: uncertainty in clinical practice; the interactions among biomedicine, culture, and society; how gender, race, and class relate to illness; and the role medicine should play when it cannot save our lives. This course is suitable for students interested in literature, healthcare, or the intersection of the two fields.
