SED 662 - Language Systems (Education)

This course provides an introduction to the nature and study of human language and offers a summary of contemporary literacy research and instructional approaches that relate to language and language systems. In particular, it focuses on the historical development of English, provides critical and sociocultural perspectives of English language learners and speakers of dialects, and catalogues instructional approaches for encoding and decoding. In addition to exploring the contribution of memory and attention to early learning, students will also consider what it means to learn, speak, and understand language.

 Prerequisite: SED 661 .  Admission to the Critical & Cultural Literacy, M.Ed. program.
